  15.                             WHAT IS SHAREWARE? 
  16.  
  17. Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying
  18. it.  If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected
  19. to register.  Individual programs differ on details -- some request
  20. registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period.
  21. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using
  22. the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  24. Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
  25. copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
  26. below.  Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
  27. authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
  28. are good programs and bad ones!)  The main difference is in the method of
  29. distribution.  The author specifically grants the right to copy and
  30. distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. 
  31. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk
  32. vendor may copy their Shareware.

  34. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.  You should find
  35. software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
  36. Shareware.  The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
  37. can try before you buy.  And because the overhead is low, prices are low
  38. also.  Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use
  39. the product, you don't pay for it.

  44. Users of DAMENU must accept this disclaimer of warranty: "DAMENU is supplied
  45. as is.  The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including,
  46. without limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
  47. purpose.  The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  48. consequential, which may result from the use of DAMENU."

  50. DAMENU is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user for
  51. evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do not give
  52. it away altered or as part of another system.  The essence of
  53. "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
  54. software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers
  55. to  continue to develop new products.  If you find this program useful and
  56. find that you are using DAMENU and continue to use DAMENU after a reasonable
  57. trial period, you must make a registration payment of $15.00 to Just-In-Time
  58. Computing Services.  The $15.00 registration fee will license one copy for
  59. use on any one computer at any one time.

  61. Commercial users of DAMENU must register and pay for their copies of DAMENU
  62. within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.  Site-License
  63. arrangements may be made by contacting Just-In-Time Computing Services.

  65.                            VENDOR INFORMATION

  67. Anyone distributing DAMENU for any kind of remuneration must first contact
  68. Just-In-Time Computing Services at the address below for authorization.  This
  69. authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized by the
  70. (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such
  71. distributors may begin offering DAMENU immediately (However Just-In-Time
  72. Computing Services must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
  73. up-to-date with the latest version of DAMENU.).

  75. You are encouraged to pass a copy of DAMENU along to your friends for
  76. evaluation, as long as the DAMENU system is complete and unmodified.
  77. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
  78. they can use it.  All registered users will receive upgrade information and
  79. notification of the latest version of the DAMENU system.
